On Tuesday the 13th of July 2010 the director of the European Commission for the Western Balkans Mr. Pierre Mirel, together with the Commissioner for Refugees Mr. Vladimir Cucić and the mission chief of the International Organization for Migration Mr. Gregoire Goodstein, visited the refugees and internally displaced persons housed at the collective centre in the city of Kragujevac.
The purpose of the visit was to further appraise the needs of refugees and the internally displaced population resident in the Republic of Serbia. The visit commenced with a meeting of the representatives of the city of Kragujevac, Mrs. Slavica Saveljić, member of the City Council of Social Welfare and Peter Atanacković, the resident refugee trustee. After the meeting, a visit with the tenants of the building designated for use as social housing in protected conditions, built using the resources of the EU in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration was organized. Following the meeting with Mrs. Biljana Radovanović the caretaker of the building for social housing in protected conditions, a visit to the collective centres of, "MD-eh," and "Trmbas," which currently house 258 refugee and internally displaced persons was organized.
The Commissioner for Refugees used this opportunity to familiarise Mr. Mirel with the ongoing programs for the allocation of social housing and economic empowerment in the Republic of Serbia, additionally mentioning the necessity for the further drafting of programs aimed at the closure of the remaining collective centres and made a point of referring to the various problems associated with the realisation of the rights of refugees in their home countries.
