4 families of internally displaced persons were presented with houses in the villages of Berilovac, Sukovo, Poljska Ržana and Veliko selo near Pirot

Four families of displaced persons were presented with houses in the villages of Berilovac, Sukovo, Poljska Ržana and Veliko selo near Pirot owing to the cooperation between the Commissariat for Refugees and the government of the municipality of Pirot. The Project itself is valued at 2.8 million dinars. The majority of the aforementioned resources were made available by the Commissariat while the municipality of Pirot contributed the remaining 200,000 dinars.

The trustee of the Commissariat for Refugees from the municipality of Pirot Mr. Zoran Gogić stated that the pilot project of the Commissariat for Refugees, UNHCR, the SDC and the municipality of Pirot has since 2004 built a total of 10 housing units intended for refugees and has thereby managed to accommodate 50 persons within the communities of Radin Do and the village of Poljska Ržana. In Poljska Ržana, located some 2 kilometres from Pirot, 3 houses containing 2 apartments for the accommodation of 6 families have been constructed as also in Radin Do where 2 houses containing two apartments have also been built. Aside from the construction of these houses, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation has financed the acquisition of building materials for the purpose of constructing houses for refugee and  displaced persons already in possession of their own plots of land, thus effectively resolving the housing concerns of a further five families. The Italian organization for solidarity has in cooperation with the Commissariat for Refugees acquired 11 village households intended for refugee and displaced persons. The American humanitarian organization (IRC) through the purchase of building materials has assisted in the adaptation of houses belonging to the local population. The local population is charged with the responsibility of providing accommodation within these houses free of charge, for some 20 families for a period of 2 years.

He also stated that the municipality of Pirot has adopted the local action plan for the accommodation of refugees until 2013. By means of this action plan the remaining 20 refugees and 260 displaced persons from Kosovo and Metohija, with the assistance of the Commissariat for Refugees and other relevant donors, will be provided with a solution to their housing concerns through the acquisition of village households and the purchase of materials and equipment necessary for the commencement of family businesses.
