The representatives of the Federal Office for Migration of Switzerland paid an official visit to the Republic of Serbia on the 14th and 15th of March. The visit was the result of enduring continuation of successful cooperation between the two countries.

The first day of the visit was reserved for work meetings held within the premises of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration as also within those of the Ministry of the Interior.  The meetings were attended by the representatives of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration, headed by the Commissioner, Mr. Vladimir Cucic, the Ministry of the Interior, headed by the Head of the Border Police Directorate, Gen. Nenad Banovic, the representatives of the Federal Office for Migration and Cooperation of Switzerland, headed by H.E. Eduardo Gnesa, the Special Ambassador of the Federal Office for Migration of Switzerland, as also by the representatives of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, headed by Mrs. Isabel Perich.  

Commissioner Vladimir Cucic formally commenced the two day meetings with a presentation of the activities performed by the Commissariat in which he shed light on the structural changes and expansion of the mandated responsibilities of the Commissariat which occurred upon the adoption of the Law on Migration Management.  He further went on to express his gratitude for the support received through the SDC in recent years as also for the considerable assistance provided to the Republic of Serbia over the course of the past 20 years on behalf of the Confederation of Switzerland.

Mrs. Isabel Perich, the Country Director of the SDC in the Republic of Serbia made reference to the numerous projects implemented within the Republic of Serbia through the SDC and further went on to define the priorities and goals which are to guide future cooperation.  Speaking on the topic of the positive results of jointly undertaken projects, H.E. Eduardo Gnesa expressed his readiness for the continuation and improvement of the cooperation existing between these two institutions.  During the afternoon session, Gen. Nenad Banovic presented concrete measures which the Republic of Serbia is currently implementing and which concern the maintenance of the Visa Liberalization Regime and further made allusions to the preventative activities being implemented in order to decrease the number of persons from Serbia seeking asylum in Switzerland.  He stressed that the speeding up the procedures to 48 hours as concerns responses issued in relation to asylum requests within the Confederation of Switzerland has occasioned a considerable decrease in the number of submitted claims.    

On the second day of the visit, the representatives of the Federal Office for Migration of Switzerland paid a visit to the Asylum Centre in Bogovadja as also to the Centre for the Urgent Accommodation of Asylum Seekers located in Vracevici.

The representatives of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation expressed their readiness for the continuation of cooperation as also their willingness to further support the institutions of the Republic of Serbia within the field of migration management.  The visit was concluded with the representatives of both institutions expressing their appreciation for the successful cooperation which has unfolded thus far, further reiterating their expectations that the partnership between the two countries will continue to be improved in the coming period.
