Asylum seekers children headed to school in Bogovadja

Two children of asylum seekers, a native of Somalia, on the January 16th 2013 started the first year of affiliated class in primary school "Mile Dubljević" from Lajkovac in the village Bogovadja. Salah and Jamal are the twins, 12-year olds, who have been living in Serbia for about a year. During their stay at the asylum center in Bogovadja children have learned the Serbian language through conversations with center management, employees and also through contacts with the locals. They are very communicative, curious and resourceful. They have assisted in translation during daily activities at the Centre for Asylum Seekers in Bogovadja, and during their stay in the center they have learned the basics of Persian language through socializing with the children from Afghanistan. They have never been involved in the educational system and this is a challenge for them and for their family. Parents are not educated but they are more than satisfied with the fact that their children go to school with neighbors, children of locals. They recognized the need to engage their children in the educational system and to thereby prepare them better for the challenges and life in Europe. Dreams of this family are directed to the EU and the countries of Western Europe, even though they are residing in Serbia for a long time.

Children are involved in the joint department of the first and third grade, and local children were very interested and open to meet new classmates. On this occasion they got a new teacher to whom 16th of January was the first day.

Salah and Jamal know many children in Bogovadja since they all often play football, but they also often face  in the shops in individual drop by to buy candy.

Two new students are very excited about going to school and they try to take school work seriously and to be good students. Their work and progress in school and department is monitored and coordinated by their teacher and pedagogue of the Centre for the Protection and Assistance to asylum seekers. Children know the Cyrillic alphabet, which they have also learned in the asylum center in Bogovadja.
