Swedish Migration Board visits Commissariat for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia

Swedish Migration Board was at two-day visit to Commissariat for Refugees and Migration from 3. to 5. of April 2013. During these two days study colleagues from Sweden, in addition to representatives of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration, met with representatives of the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of the Republic of Serbia. The visit was organized with the aim of improving cooperation between the two countries in the field of migration management and follows a visit by representatives of the Republic of Serbian to Swedish Migration Board held in June 2012.


Management of activities of refugees and internally displaced persons, the housing of asylum seekers and implementation of asylum procedures, reintegration of returnees under readmission agreements at the local level and the employment of foreigners in the Republic of Serbia and Serbian citizens abroad were presented during the working sessions, which were attended by representatives of the Serbian authorities in charge of managing migration flows.


Vladimir Cucić, Commissioner for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia, informed the participants about the efforts that the Republic of Serbia has invested to improve the framework for developing migration policies in line with European standards.


General Nenad Banovic, head of the Border Police, presented the activities carried out by the Republic of Serbia to maintain a visa-free regime and reduce the number of asylum seekers from Serbia into the European Union.
Representatives of the Swedish Migration Board presented the situation of asylum in Sweden and spoke of the management mechanisms and activities aimed at addressing the growing influx of asylum seekers in Sweden, and also presented a system of information on countries of origin of asylum seekers in whose systematic development they have been working in recent years.


It was organized a visit to Pozarevac for the representatives of the Swiss Migration Board where the participants had the opportunity to learn about the work of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration and local action planning. Also, they visited the Roma settlement in which, thanks to the project of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration and the European Union funds, were provided the permanent and sustainable housing solutions for 20 Roma families from Kosovo and Metohija.


With the aim to inform representatives of the Swedish Migration Board about the activities done by all key players in order to ensure sustainable reintegration of returnees under the readmission agreement, it was organized a visit to the NGO Roma Education Centre and the Office for readmission at the airport Nikola Tesla. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit collective center Radinac in Smederevo.
