Veliki Mokri Lug: Construction of four buildings for refugees and internally displaced

Construction of 20 flats for refugees and displaced persons began yesterday in the Belgrade suburbia of Veliki Mokri Lug. The foundation stone of the new building was laid by the Commissioner for Refugees and Migrations Vladimir Cucić, president of the Provisional Council of Belgrade Siniša Mali, ambassadors of Japan and the United States Masafumi Kuroki and Michael Kirby and Vlade Divac.

Three buildings with 60 apartments were already built so far in this neighborhood. Twenty apartments, whose construction started yesterday, are planned to be constructed till the end of the year.

U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Michael Kirby said that the project in Veliki Mokri Lug  is "example of international cooperation, showing responsibility towards refugees of all those involved in its implementation".

Commissioner for Refugees Vladimir Cucić said he expects that within three years question of collective centers for refugees and displaced persons in Serbia will be resolved.

- EU donations through IPA program will enable resolving of the housing problems of refugees and displaced persons in three years. In Belgrade collective center Krnjača remained and I hope that the synergy of the city authorities and international actors will soon stop the need for its existence - said Cucić.

Foundation "Ana and Vlade Divac" has launched a project to build flats for refugees and displaced persons in Veliki Mokri Lug.

Since 2010, in this suburbia, with the help of funds provided by the EU and the U.S. A, three buildings for social housing in protected conditions were built. Japanese government, the Serbian diaspora, domestic companies and Foundation Weber SentGloben supported implementation of the project which was launched yesterday.
