On the road to Beirut where the Donors Conference on Syria will take place next week, United Nations Secretary General’s Humanitarian Envoy Dr Ahmed Al-Meraikhi visited Serbia in order to learn more about the migrant situation in our country.
"I am truly impressed by what I saw, foremost by the manner in which the Asylum Center in Krnjaca is managed as well as by the overall treatment of migrants in Serbia. I believe that this experience should be shared with other countries which are also hosting migrants", Dr Ahmed Al-Meraikhi said.
He visited the Center in Krnjaca accompanied by the Assistant Commissioner Ivan Gerginov and Representative of UNHCR in Serbia Hans Schodder.
Gerginov informed the Humanitarian Envoy that five asylum centers along with 13 reception centers throughout Serbia are currently accommodating 3,905 migrants and that approximately 300 more are unregistered, located near the borders with Croatia and Hungary, as well as in the city center of Belgrade.
Humanitarian Envoy visited the facility where migrant women sew clothes, curtains and towels, the common room where migrants spend time playing pool and board games, and the medical center where dozens of check-ups are performed daily and the children’s corner where he was greeted by the children who were making props for the puppet show.
At the end of the visit, Dr Abdul Al-Merikhi talked to the Syrian and Iraqi migrants in private. He concluded the visit by addressing the media, highlighting the excellent experience of Serbian treatment of migrants, saying that he will pass on the positive impression at the conference in Lebanon.
