Immunization of migrant children against smallpox

The vaccination of migrant children against smallpox started on April 26, 2018 in the AC Krnjaca and will continue throughout May in all other asylum and reception centers in Serbia. The program of immunization will include 1,592 children under the age of 18 and it will be carried out by the clinics in the centers, in cooperation with pediatricians from the local health centers and epidemiologists from the competent public health institutes.

Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Institute of Public Health of Serbia "Dr Milan Jovanović Batut" is in charge of the immunization action while the vaccines were donated by the "Doctors Without Borders". It is anticipated that MMR vaccine should be given to all the children who have not been vaccinated yet. The number may vary because migrants are constantly moving, and if there is an increase in the number of children, sufficient amount will be provided.

There have not been any cases of smallpox among the migrants so far. Anyone entering the reception or asylum center must be subjected to a medical examination which is provided by pediatricians and general practitioners in these centers, thus receiving the appropriate health card. The vaccination will be performed according to the following schedule: AC Krnjaca 25-27 April; RC Adasevci and RC Principovac 7-8 May; RC Subotica and RC Sombor 14-15 May; RC Kikinda 9-10 May; AC Banja Koviljaca and AC Bogovadja 16-17 May; AC Sjenica and AC Tutin 21-22 May; RC Pirot and RC Dimitrovgrad 23-24 May; RC Divljana 24- 25 May; RC Bujanovac and RC Vranje 28-29 May; RC Bosilegrad and RC Presevo 30-31 May 2018.
